National Capital Area Scholastic Rowing Association becomes Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association

As of July 1st, 2008 NCASRA is VASRA. The change is a reflection of the activity of the past two years that has seen the number of member schools outside of Virginia decline by over 50% while the number of Virginia schools have increased. This is the fourth name that we have had and, in many ways, this change signals a return to the in-state emphasis of the charter established by the original five schools in 1979. (Original name was Northern Virginia Rowing Association. “Scholastic” was added in 1986.)

Inclusion of schools in the Maryland and District of Columbia metro area was right for the time when rowing was expanding in the late 80’s and 90’s.  Now those MD and DC schools are on the verge of establishing their own scholastic rowing association and this is a good thing, indeed, not only because the number of MD and DC schools that have rowing teams is expected to increase, but it will be great for competition. Also, there are differences in the state governance of scholastic sports and VASRA abides by Virginia High School League regulations. Member schools outside Virginia must do so as well. Administration of scholastic rowing in both jurisdictions will be greatly facilitated.

At one time VASRA had 45 member schools, a number that was becoming cumbersome to administer and manage by the entirely volunteer staff of the organization … the reduction (presently 37) has eased that situation.
